Why Does It Take A Major Event In Order To Give Yourself Permission To Get It Together?

Okay, I have pushed it to the limit.  Truly.

For awhile I was even inadvertently IN STYLE.  Well, no longer.  I am a hot mess.

Officially.

I’m not even going to address all the things that make me a hot mess in this post… I’m just gonna focus on the MOST ANNOYING AND GLARINGLY OBVIOUS ONE:

I am sporting three inch roots these days. (THINK bad Saturday Night Live skit. THINK trailer park. THINK the scary women in WalMart.) And I can no longer let it go for another week.  I am going to NYC on Thursday and Friday and I have a big appointment coming up shortly thereafter. (Not trying to be cagey but the “appointment” is another blog all together.)

NO TIME TO SPARE. And now I am stressed out about it.

This dilemma got me thinking…

Why is it that it takes a major event for most women to take care of themselves? We are so busy taking care of everything else that we put it off until we just can’t possibly put it off anymore.  Until the last possible moment.  And then (voila!) we create more stress in our lives.

That is just SAD. I know that “it is life.” But I still think it is sad.

I do this all the time.  From fixing food for the family to exercising to engaging in a hobby to buying new underwear, even.  I encourage and take care of everyone else and rarely put myself in the front of the line.  On the sparse occasion that I do put myself first… I ALWAYS feel guilty about it.

It usually takes major event, like the one coming up, to force me to handle it.

UGH.  Anyone else out there relating?

On the bright side…. I’m going to New York on Thursday and Friday.  HOLY $#@%!  I’ll fill you in tomorrow!

Couldn’t agree more! We ALWAYS put everyone else first and then we FREAK when we have to get our own act together. You are not alone! Totally related to this post.

BTW, how do yo like WP? I am highly considering a move to WP so I am trying to get feedback from bloggers who use it.

I am a procrastinator. Sometimes I feel like I am addicted to it. Hello, my name is Think Tank Momma and I have a problem.

You are not alone. Perhaps we both need sponsors! :)

I hear ya. And we both know I’m MUCH worse than you are. Heck if I hadn’t tweet stalked a local salon into doing my hair I would have headed to Vegas sporting MY OWN trailer roots! I often wonder how there are entire industries dedicated to beauty and fashion and STILL so many of us mom types that feel guilty doing those things for ourselves. Can we say MIXED messages? Oh, btw I have one pair of panties that are older than 3 of my kids!

The hair appointment dilema… thanks for reminding me it’s time I make one (& try and figure out when, the babysitting, etc… with a 6 month old who only wants milk straight from Mamma!)

I am relating! We often take care of everything & everyone else first before we even think about doing something for ourselves. I should know, I also have some roots (maybe a haircut…) that need help! Thanks for posting & congratulations on being the Twitter Mom feature blog!

I am with you. I usually wait to get my hair cut until I can’t stand it anymore even though my short cut looks much better if maintained every 6-8 weeks. Usually an upcoming trip of event is what usually pushs me over the edge to finally go take care of myself.
