The whole idea behind Father’s day began in 1910 while Sonora Smart-Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in church in Spokane, Washington. The sermon was focused on praising the sacrifices that mothers made for their children. It was during that service that Dodd realized that in her own family it had been her father (William Jackson Smart) who had sacrificed-raising herself and five sons alone. For her, the hardships her father had endured on their farm called to mind the unsung feats of fathers everywhere.
It was in this spirit that she proposed a local Fathers Day celebration. The towns ministers and members of the Spokane YMCA welcomed her idea.
A well-deserved holiday was born.
Happy Father’s Day to all the men who have had the privilege to raise a new generation.
