I agree! I have 120 community service hours at a Science Museum for kids. Something about watching a 5 year old freak out because they figured something out makes me feel amazing! I’m also considering volunteering at a soup kitchen (There’s one nearby that doubles as a shelter for families), because I wanna become involved in something that is really there for the less fortunate. A place where I could actually help change someone’s life for the better. If I know that I’ve had a positive effect on atleast one person I’ll die happy.

“Can be time, talent or treasure.” I like that…it’s catchy.

I don’t know if I feel obligated, but I do know that I’m a better person for doing it.

I completely agree. I have been blessed in my life in so many ways. As much as I would like to think that all this was my doing, I know better. I feel that it is incumbent upon me to “pay it forward”.

I’m not sure that I agree we should be or feel obligated. I know that when I do spend my efforts helping my fellow (wo)man I find no greater joy than in service to others. I don’t know that if I felt I HAD TO do it, that it would hold the same joy.

I do because I want to, and need to for me.

Does that make sense?

I actually agree with this quote a lot. And if I were to have read it about 2 yrs ago (maybe even a year ago), I might not have agreed. But as I’ve seen God work in my life, He’s begun to really change my heart for caring, loving, and giving to others.

I like what you said about ‘The “HOW” is different for everyone’. Well said. I’ve recently been reading a pre-released version of the book: Primal by Mark Batterson (pastor of NCC in DC), and the second chapter is VERY challenging. He addresses this very topic…and puts some dollars and cents to it as well.

A VERY worthwhile read if you get the chance.

I absolutely agree. I try to be involved with as much community service as my life allows. I fundraise for JDRF every year as my niece is a Type 1 Diabetic. I try to donate to worthy causes throughout the year. I volunteer at my daughter’s school as much as possible. It does keep me even busier than I already am being a single mom with two kids. But it makes me feel really good
