Is This Really News Because I Totally Can’t Turn The TV On Anymore…
Can I get up on my soap box for a second?
What is wrong with the media these days? People, I am tired of it.
Jon Gosslin is broke. Oh THERE is a shocker. Really? What? We didn’t see that sucker coming? We were under the impression that he was the man of the house? And Tiger. Oh, Tiger. A 14th mistress? Really?
Fascinating.
I have to tell you – I can’t watch/read the news anymore. Everything is just so INAPPROPRIATE. I mean, I have two young boys in my house. These children’s ears are tuned in. They hear everything. (Especially if I don’t want them to!)
The news just fills their little minds with tragedy and loss and violence. Not to mention, sex. Case in point: the other day my son asked me, “Mommy. What is a rapist?”
I had no idea how to answer him without filling his little mind with evil.
I don’t know about you but I don’t WANT my kids to discover these types of issues yet. It fills me with dread when I hear the news media talk about fathers that kill their families or authority figures that abuse children or soldiers that kill innocent victims. And of course, these are exactly the stories that the folks obsessively focus on.
When kids overhear this type of thing, slowly the confidence they have in their surroundings and their view of the way that the world SHOULD BE just melts away.
Why doesn’t anybody report on the GOOD in the world?
At least then I could turn the TV on again.

I gave up in the news, particularly the local news, years ago. It’s annoying, sensationalized, bull crap. Instead I read the little intros on Yahoo and MSN and if it’s interesting I click and read the rest. It allows me to ignore the boring crap and focus on important things, like the fact that one of the New Kids on the Block just had a baby. You know, news. Congrats on your Washington Post gig, too. Looks like great things are happening for you. Such a hard worker you are! So you’re not sitting in your bathrobe eating chocolates all day? Guess that’s just me:)

I agree. I can barely handle watching the news, much less would I want my children to hear it. I hate that the “real” news is so focused on People Magazine and tabloid stories. UGH.

What is especially troublesome is that it appears Americans actually like this type of news. There ARE news programs, like the Newshour on PBS, which do not include Tiger’s floozies or Gosslin drama, but no one watches them.
I stopped watching the news a few months back after the first 5 stories were about murders of some sort, it was quite disturbing. And I definitely do not need to hear yet another story about Tiger Woods, I mean, who really cares anymore?

It is definitely inappropriate listening material for anyone under the age of say…18.
The news should come with a rating M, for Mature audiences. Seriously, they have to post that for everything else, why not the news.
May contain stories of sex, rape, murder, incest, robbery, homicide, nudity, I could go on and on. And that’s in a 30 minute segment. In the theaters? They would call that a snuff film!
Just sayin’

this is exactly why I can’t listen to the news either – my daughers immediately pick up on things, like the murder of a child, then ask me in worried tones what happened to the child.
They don’t need that stress, and I certainly don’t want the “what is a rapist” question to pop up either. There is no explaining how a hurt might almost be worse than dying.

So glad you feel the same way. I don’t care if my kids are more naive than others. Suits me just fine.
