This is crazy. Barbie was all about empowerment. The Burka doesn't give that feeling. There is nothing empowered about women who cannot choose what they wear in public.

Pregnant Barbie should have had a replaceable stomach that was totally flabby like a big sack of nothing.

How in the heck did I miss the pregnant Barbie? What a riot! That must have been when I was off pretending to be a boy for those couple of years. Flat stomach replacement, huh? AS IF!

Oh Lord. (Allah?) Have mercy.

The Americans are corrupting/exploiting the Islamic culture again. It's jihad at Gymboree now!!!!! ;o)

Actually, so many other thoughts in my head...

I can't help but wonder if the burka can be removed and if Barbie still has the same sexy body underneath? Yikes! Hands will be cut off and eyes will be gouged out all over the middle east!

But seriously. It's a doll. It's the same doll time and time again. It's just different clothes to match the trend of the time. That's why I prefer Target Barbie over Neiman Marcus Barbie...I get the same doll dressed in red shorts and white top for $10, instead of dressed in black shorts and white for $1,000. (Don't forget, red will dye black!)

Okay seriously, my daughter's 5th birthday was at the Barbie Hall of Fame in Palo Alto, California. It was so fun to walk through and reminisce over the Barbies I had when I was a kid!! Check this out: http://www.stayfreemagazine.org/11/barbie.htm

So LOVED it!

Sadly, my daughter's party (March 1999) was one of the last events at the BHoF. It closed its doors the very next month.

Deep sigh.

I think to this day, my favorite was Jet Pilot Barbie. The one I hated most was available just a few years ago. It was Preggers Barbie whose stomach came off and the baby could be taken out, and a flat tummy piece could be put into place. Gimme a break. When I was pregnant and ready to deliver, I was a fat cow. A few days post-partum, I was still a fat cow.

I think I needed a burka!?!

From that piece "the message of Barbie is you can be whatever you want to be"... SURE if you want to be treated as being of less value than a COW and stoned to death should some sicko rape you.. because of course it would be your fault for letting your ankle show from under that Burkah! While visiting Morocco in my younger days I recall seeing a man and young boy get into a beautiful Mercedes on a very very hot day in North Africa. The woman who had been holding the boys hand until the car door closed then walked down the street after the car. Our guide told us that we, in the tour group, were honored women as we were "permitted" to ride in the bus. NICE! I'm all for Barbie representative of all cultures but I think I draw a line on this one.
