Why Don’t They Make School Supplies Tailored To Boys?

This subject vexes me.

VEXES ME.

Every year I go school supply shopping and every year my frustration level rises.  So I am putting this question out to the Universe: WHY DON’T THEY MAKE MORE SCHOOL SUPPLIES TAILORED TO BOYS?

You can find even the most standard of all standard things (like, a hand cranking pencil sharpener) in a girl pattern or color.  But not boys. Oh. No.

Girls have a plethora of folders, binders, pencil cases, composition books, lunch boxes and the like available in every possible color, pattern, combination and style.  You can be a rocker, a pink princess, a horse enthusiast, even a coordinating little prepster.  Boys have none of that.

Every once in awhile you come across something.  BUT IT IS RARE.  My boys are 9 & 11.  Trust me, they don’t want “Cars” folders.  They are a little past Mater and Lightning McQueen.  They need something that is a little rock star, a little skater boy or hell, even something plaid would suffice.

JUST GIVE ME SOMETHING.  ANYTHING.

Being Daddy to two young daughters, I actually never noticed this problem till you so emphatically pointed it out. Very good point! The flip side: my girls take FOREVER to decide …

You don’t know how much this vexes me. Primarily I’m angry about the small selection of clothes but you make a good point on the supplies. In general, yes. They absolutely cater to girls. Cute kittens? Little puppy dogs? Totally feminine.

We did go early this year and found some masculine stuff – Mead had regular primary colors (excitement) and we got some American muscle car stuff. When we cleaned out Target I justified the cost of over-supplying ourselves because they just simply don’t ever make boys stuff.

The retailers are still trying desperately to make up for the “Math is Hard” Barbi thing. “SEE?! We’ll make all the learning related gear for girls!”

I just took my boys on a school supply shopping trip. It was our first trip for “real” supplies since my oldest is going into 1st grade. You are so right about the lack of choices for boys! I tried to sell my son on the kitty & puppy folders but he wanted nothing to do w/them. Have to go now to try other stores! Ugh.

Well I guess that means you better get some Modge Podge! I’m sure there are tons of craft tutorials to jazz up school supplies.

Or better yet start your own line :-)

I just want to buy school supplies that my kids actually get to USE. Every year we are given this laundry list of things to buy and attached is the instruction: Do Not Label School Supplies. This is because all items purchased are put into a “free for all cabinet” and my kids hardly ever get to keep the cool stuff I buy. Grrrr…. My remedy? I buy the bare minimum, then a couple of week after school has started I get my kids the stuff they want and we sneak it in all stealth like. I also write their name on it…WITH A SHARPIE. I know…I’m such a rebel, right?

I am guessing your sons would be more than happy to have some strategically placed Miranda Cosgrove or Selena Gomez folders in their plain drab binder.
