My Fashion Article Earned Me Some Haters
Clearly, I am an idiot.
I thought that writing a “light & funny” piece on the Top 5 Style DON’Ts for Hybrid Mom would be a pretty standard assignment.
I never thought I would be called out as a “bad writer, catty, judgmental and @#%^&*!” But I was.
Why am I telling you this? Partly because it has been slightly consuming me. Partly because I have never been involved in drama. People, some of these folks HATE me. Holy cow!
And I guess the biggest thing that is upsetting me is the fact that I am second guessing my writing skills. When you insult people you don’t mean to insult, well, you have to either completely dismiss them or re-evaluate your own skills. So for a woman with classic nice-girl syndrome (READ: me), this situation is completely unnerving. It is enough to make me want to drop the humor altogether.
Has anyone else out there found themselves in a similar situation of doubt? How did YOU handle it?

Something you said must have applied to them and it must have struck a nerve. I personally found nothing offensive in the article. You merely pointed out they way some moms dress that makes them look like they don’t care Or worse, that they lost a big part of themselves.
I am an offender but I’m okay with that because I’m okay with me. Clearly they are not entirely okay with themselves or at least how they dress.
I would have to ignore them (really hard for a nice-girl like me too)

Don’t let the haters get you down. If they could do such a great job writing an article like that, why weren’t they invited to write it?
No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. ~Eleanor Roosevelt
I usually find being rude and obnoxious wins me a lot of friends. Ok, maybe that’s not true, but don’t doubt your writing skills, you rock!

ummm… *raises hand in air*
yes, haters have made me doubt.
i have handled hate by growing a very tough skin, getting a PO box, and hiding in bathrooms.
xoxo. hang in there.

You know what? I think many readers just really head out into the blogosphere to pick a fight. They are determined to disagree/take issue/pick apart because they feel they will prove something to the world that way – maybe about how enlightened they are? about how much smarter they are? I don’t know.
I read through the comments over on your article page, and the people who took issue were determined not to see the humor in it. Why bother reading a fashion article if they have no interest in being fashionable, and in fact take issue with an emphasis on looking nice?
For the record, I look like a trainwreck most of the time, but at least I know that all of your tips are solid, smart advice. And things we’d all do well to embrace at a level that’s doable for us.

I agree with all these comments and can also say from experience? You haven’t arrived until you have haters. WELCOME! haha
Seriously- don’t feed the trolls or let them get you down. WE know you rock, and that’s what matters.
HUGS!

Thank you Amy! I could learn a lesson or two from you!
Got room for me? I’m thinking of bathroom surfing myself!
My favorite quote… thanks for the reminder!
You know what is funny? I am totally an offender myself! In fact I laughed when writing the article… clearly, I needed to get my act together. I think I hit on one of the great mommy debates of all time. Sheesh!
Woo hoo! I have arrived! Perfect… Thanks for the love MaryMac!
A light and funny piece earned you haters? I have no idea what you’re talking about.
I totally thought of you! I was going to email you even. It got picked up on YAHOO Shine and the first comment is about how I clearly don’t have kids. Muwahahhaaa!
I loved your article, I thought it was just pointing out some good reminders, that we need to take care of ourselves!! I think it must have hit a nerve with some people, because maybe they aren’t feeling so great about themselves.
Please don’t let it affect how you feel about your writing, I thought it was light and right on the money.
I tried to resist leaving a comment at the end of the article. … I held out for an entire five minutes before jumping into the shark tank.
I write a lot of things with tongue-in-cheek humor and find that people either ‘get it’ or don’t. When I look further, those who get it are my favoritest peeps, you know, the kindred spirit sorts. The others are stodgy fuddy-duddies and who cares what they think anyway? Write on, sister.
Nic is the perfect example of the toxic nature of people who feel empowered whilst hiding behind the anonymity of a computer screen. The lesson there, and we know this because we know Nic AND YOU.. is don’t LET them judge you. You know who you are. Your talents, character and skill speak for themselves. (I wrote this with lip gloss on, having ditched my signature ponytail and yoga pants and guess what I FELT GREAT about ME! thank you)

Hey Jennifer Tim from soge shirts here. I read your article and as someone who has written a lot of fashion articles I really don’t understand what the negative people were talking about. I thought the article was light and funny and not catty at all. Some people are just so sensitive.
From a male perspective even though I admire all mothers it is really nice to see a woman who still makes time for herself.
I can’t relate to being a mother but it seems like it could be so easy to just put your kids completely before yourself and forget that you need to take care of yourself personally. Rocking sweatpants every once in a while is cool but if its daily its probably not great for the old self esteem. Just my two cents and I thought you did a great job.

little late… just saw this now, but agreed. yes yes and yes. i learned the hard way that anonymity behind the computer screen is quite empowering for those who choose it, and causes a lot of pain and self-doubt. lara is absolutely right… you know who you are and what you stand for, and while at times it’s hard to stand when being cast down by others, there are those of us who will lift you up and support you.
