Keep Calm and Dream On:The Sleep Number i10
“The bed is a bundle of paradoxes: we go to it with reluctance, yet we quit it with regret; we make up our minds every night to leave it early, but we make up our bodies every morning to keep it late.” - Charles Caleb Colton
If you’ve been around my blog a time or two you know that back in May I participated in a Tweet Dreams event for Sleep Numbe
r/Select Comfort with my friend Lara of Chicken Nuggets of Wisdom. As part of that promotion I was given the opportunity to own the new i10 Sleep Number bed. (Yes, I am still pinching myself over their generosity and my good fortune.)
My husband and I purchased our first bed together 16 years ago. You think it was time for an upgrade?
So when the Sleep Number bed arrived two weeks ago it was quite the occasion in our household. And let me just say… I don’t think that I have been so impressed by furniture delivery since well, ever. The bed comes in a number of pieces and these guys are clearly trained professionals. The bed was completely assembled and fabulous in 30 minutes flat. (Plus they were so nice and polite that I wanted to bake them cookies or something. And I don’t even bake… )
As for the quality of our sleep since that day? WOW. I can only describe the difference by saying that it was like we were upgraded from a cheap roadside motel to the Waldorf Astoria.
- Dialing your own comfort, obviously. (Ironically, the husband and I are both a 30.)
- Tremendously comfortable and so incredibly easy to fall asleep on. (A little TOO easy to fall asleep on. No reading yourself to sleep required.)
- Once you find your perfect number you never wake up stiff or sore. (Quite magical, actually. I’m sure there is a technical explanation for this but I prefer to attribute it to magic.)
- Temperature balancing technology. (This is a biggie in my house. I’m always cold. Hubby is always hot. Never failed to cause a middle-of-the-night comforter fight.)
- Completely and totally customizable to your individual body and preferences. (Right down to the dual foam. My husband’s side was set up different then mine. I prefer the memory foam closest to my body.)
- BONUS: I seized the opportunity to begin a remodel of my bedroom. Muwhahahaha….
Cons for the i10
- It is so super comfortable that my children are continuously clamoring to sleep in it. (Seriously, I love them but… I CAN’T GET THEM OUT OF MY BED.)
- If you are not a big fan of remote controls then adding two more might not suit your fancy. I did hear that they might have an app in the works though. Holla!
- Sorry folks, I tried to come up with another con but I can’t.
(I have to say that our Sleep Number professional Elaine in the Frederick, MD store was fabulous. She was witty and fun and uber on-top-of follow up. I even purchased a couple more items from the store per her suggestion.)

I’ll be sleeping in your bed while you are on vacation. Just call me Golidlocks.
It’s bliss, it is.
We have had one for several years and I can’t say that I was as impressed as you were. Still haven’t found my “sleep number” and I still wake up occasionally with sore lower back and stiff neck.
I have been seriously considering getting on of these, as my boyfriend can’t sleep in my bed because of it’s pillow top. Won’t be getting one tomorrow, because they’re quite spendy – but it’s definitely great to hear you’ve had such a great experience! Makes it a serious contender when I make the plunge!

We just purchased one of these from Elaine as well! It will be delivered while we’re away. Can’t wait to get back to a wonderful bed!!
My husband and I have had a Sleep Number bed for several years now. We bought it with the hope of decreasing back pain for me, but the back pain is still there and now my husband wakes up in pain too. I have tried different numbers, positions, etc. but the Sleep Number seems to have been a poor choice for both of us. Unfortunately, it was too expensive to replace any time soon!
I sleep well in my Sleep Number bed – far better than I sleep on hotel beds. But the claim of never being sore or stiff again is ridiculous. Every person has pain for their own individual reasons. The Sleep Number may or may not help.
Btw, I added a good memory foam topper to my bed. For me, the combination of a Sleep Number bed with 3 inches of memory foam is heavenly.
Nice idea. I have had my sleep number bed for over 10 years. I wish it had more pillow top, the memory foam may do the trick. It was great during my pregnany as I was able to adjust to the weight of my belly. And my child now 6, can’t help but fall asleep in it.
How is it for “other activities”? We used to have a waterbed (years ago) that I absolutely loved. My wife slept well on it, but was very unhappy with the lack of support for other things.
Does this mattress give the needed support?
Is comfort and neutral joint alignment your ultimate goal in a sleep system? Sounds like this fits the bill perfectly.
If you’re curious, a different sleeping paradigm involves continuous stretching and relaxation, powered by breathing. It’s sleeping on the floor. We use a washable cotton sleeping bag on carpet, no pillows.

Benefits Wifey and I have seen in the last 9 months: easier to fall asleep, easier to wake up, elimination of hygienic concerns with bedding, better circulation and heat management, reduction of body odor, reduction in joint pain, wildly increased flexibility, cessation of involuntary micro corrective muscle movements, and the freedom to fully relax on any hard surface.
As one adherent says, “Comfort is the feeling of strength and flexibility leaving your body.”
It’s recommended to do a 3 week trial “cold turkey” switch. You can always go back to your bed. Sleep well.
Note these contraindications: obesity, certain debilitating injuries.
Forget high dollar foam mattresses. Go to a good health food store and get Barleans Flax Seed Oil. Recommended dose is 2TSP a day. Put it in a small jar with orange juice, shake and drink. Give it one month of daily use, and you will never wake up with an ache or pain again, no matter how hard you work the previous day. It also clears the arteries of plaque.
Before buying a sleep number bed, find a hotel that has them, and stay a night. It could save you years poor sleep and thousands of dollars.
I spent 3 nights on one recently while traveling, and was really excited to try it. It turnned out the sleep I got was so bad that I actually switched hotels midweek just so could get some rest. To me, it felt like I was sleeping on a blow up bed, even when I had it on its firmest setting. Also, the air pumps that keep it filled made too much noise for me sleep well.
I have seen them on craigslist for very good deals. Also Ebay,
Sleep Number made a big improvement in early 2011 by adding two zippers so that the bladders can be zipped together. So, just get two zippers, queen uses 6′ zipper (I bought YKK). BIG difference! Also added a 2″ king size memory foam topper for the queen size, so it would cover both the top and sizes.
