One of the mostsplendidthings about living in the DC Metro area is the vast amount of family entertainmentopportunities. We have museums, monuments, parks… you name it, we’ve got it.

I can’t think of a better place to raise a family. Especially around the holidays.

So you are probably wondering why in the world I am posting pictures and talking about the holidays in the middle of July. (No, it is not because I am trying to stress you out early this year.)

Because yesterday the Gaylord National Hotel announced the theme of this year’s ICE! /Christmas on the Potomac celebration and our family was thrilled to be among those invited to the media event.

ICE is, without a doubt, the highlight of our holiday season each year.

Even the teenager gets excited when we head to National Harbor. And that, my friends, is saying something.

This year’s theme isShrek the Halls.(Hilarious!) Shrek and I go way back so, yeah, I’m excited. :)

Which means that from Nov. 16, 2012 to Jan. 6, 2013, the DreamWorks special will be brought to life and entirely depicted within TWO-MILLION pounds of carved, colored ice.

Think about that for a moment…. two million pounds of ice.

Each year seems to get more impressive than the last.

Of course, that is just the ICE! attraction itself. Their Christmas on the Potomac celebration also includes spectacular holiday decorations, a 60 foot tall stained glass Tree of Light, nightly live musical entertainment, a fountain show, train rides, indoor snowfalls, DreamWorks Experience packages (ShrekFeast, character meetings, scavenger hunts, gingerbread house making, etc.) and so much more!

These people know how to do the holidays up right. (Want proof? My video from last year’s opening weekend can be viewed here. Watch it.)

My personal recommendation is that you stay on the property and book a room at the Gaylord National. (You are just going to have to trust me on this. The decor is over the top.) And right now is the best time to do it because you can catch the early bird pricing.

It is a family holiday experience like no other.
