Each week I get these snappy emails from The New York Road Runners chock full of training tips and motivation for the upcoming marathon.  This little e-blast successfully keeps me in marathon focus mode.

Even on vacation.

I have to tell you, there is nothing I love more than a long run at the beach.

Wind in my hair.

Motivational tunes in my ear.

The smell of salt water.

I just love it.

Except for the whole getting out of bed early part.

I suspect that even the most dedicated of athletes cannot help but be lured somewhat by the promise of sleeping in while on sabbatical.  Oh the glorious siren song of sleep…

Now that I think about it, I can’t tell you the last time I dozed later than 6:00am. But I can tell you it wasn’t while I was on this past vacation. Nope. I am in MARATHON MODE, BABY.

The workouts this week:

  • Ran 12 miles (technically, it was the weekend and I wasn’t yet on vacation)
  • Walked 3 miles.
  • Ran/walked 4  miles. (2 mile run/ 2 mile walk)
  • Ran 6 miles (9:15 pace)
  • Ran 4 miles ( 9:11 pace)
  • Rest day
  • Ran 14 miles (technically, it was my first day back from vacation so it probably doesn’t count as a vacation run)

I definitely let up on the dietary restrictions, though. If I wanted pizza, I had it. Wine? Yes, please. Ice cream cravings? Totally indulged.

It was my vacation, after all. And what fun is training for a marathon if you can’t eat good food now and again?
