Halloween has come and gone leaving families across the nation with a giant candy hangover…
Gotta love it!
Although we are one family who truly enjoys our holiday merrymaking, I don’t relish the hordes of leftover candy. (For reasons related to my propensity to each large quantities of chocolate in a single sitting. But I digress…)
One thing that we happily haven’t had to deal with is the battle between Halloween candy and braces. THAT would be a true challenge, let me tell you. (I see what my nephew and other neighborhood children go through and it is the pits.)
According to New York Orthodontist, Dr. Joseph Hung, the worst Halloween culprits for kids with braces are a bit surprising:
  • gummy bears
  • cookies
  • tootsie rolls
  • taffy
  • potato chips
  • graham crackers
  • cookies
“For kids with braces, sticky Halloween treats can break brackets and bend wires while starchy foods like crackers, chips and cookies can stick around and in between teeth, where they quickly break down into sugar,” says Hung. “The best way for parents to avoid the inevitable “sneaking” of treats by kids, is to consider new orthodontic options that are removable, like Invisalign.  This way kids can pop out their braces and enjoy Halloween treats and can also brush and floss to maintain good oral hygiene.  It’s truly a win-win situation for kids, parents and their orthodontist!”
Not to sound like a broken record on this subject, but I agree. My son is able to eat whatever treats he wants with absolutely no repercussions to his orthodontic treatment. As a matter of fact, I think it actually curtails his eating of sweets. You know, all that extra effort of brushing his teeth and trays after each treat. Teenage laziness… FTW!
Disclosure: I’m part of the Invisalign Mom Advisory Board and my son is receiving free Invisalign treatment so that we could share our honest experiences.
