February Fitness Challenge: Gaming My Way Into Fitness

Fitness confession: I’ve been following the same fitness program for what seems like forever.

Obviously anyone who has visited this blog knows that I am a runner at heart. It is what I love. That being said, I’m not in the best shape. I know that seems like a lie, but it is the truth. When it comes to muscle tone and flexibility I am pathetic.

In an effort to change that, I’ve been exploring my options and reading up on fitness.  I have come across a couple of fundamental truths about the value of varying your exercise routines: (1) it prevents boredom associated with doing the same things workout after workout and (2) helps avoid or delay reaching a plateau in performance and training results.

Makes sense, of course.

It was in the spirit of varying my route that I agreed to a Wii Fit Plus February Challenge.  Each week the folks from Nintendo give me (and my office mates – bonus!) a new routine to follow using the Wii Fit Plus.

I feel like I need to put this out there – I am not a huge gamer. I like it, for sure. But it never occurred to me to use a gaming system to workout.

But I have discovered that it is not only massively fun, it is also HARD. Again, a huge shocker for me. First, I was humbled by my Wii age… 47. Then that silly trainer kicked my butt. As in, I was yelling at a game.

{Hanging my head in shame.}

My muscles are sore and I still need to make up a workout that I missed earlier in the week… the dreaded Yoga.

I’ll keep you posted on how this goes, I’m really interested in seeing the difference it makes. So far it has kept me interested and challenged. Plus my office mates are joining in on the fun with me so that always helps.

Disclaimer: I am a Nintendo Brand Ambassador (I know, right?!) and my colleagues and I received Wii products to help facilitate the February Fitness Challenge.
