There comes a time in every mother’s life where she comes to the realization that she is no longer deemed appropriate company in public.
That time came for me yesterday when my oldest and I went for a walk. At one point in our outing, my darling offspring informed me that I would need to walk slower until we reached the corner of the lot. Coincidentally, the ‘corner of the lot’ was precisely where the throngs of children ended.
Essentially, he didn’t want anyone nearby to know we were together.
Ooph. Like a sucker punch to the gut. (Albeit an amusing one.)
I was tempted to hold his hand right then and there and scream “mommy loves you, too!” at the top of my lungs. I didn’t, of course. Contrary to popular belief, I would like for him to actually get married and move out of the house someday. I figure, why ruin his social life at 13? I’ll wait at least one more year.
So that is where it stands right now in my life – him walking in front and me behind. One day he’ll actually want to be seen with me again. At least I think that is how it happens…
