In a previous post I shared with you some of my goals for 2014. My friend Lori and I have pledged to challenge each other through the year to keep each other accountable and also, admittedly, in the spirit of competition.

For my birthday Lori gifted me with Shakeology 3 Day Cleanse. I’ve seen her do this before with much success so I really wanted to give it a go. Frankly, I wasn’t sure this experiment would work. I’d never done a fast/cleanse before and it was pretty intimidating. Plus I would have to give up coffee and that in itself made me pause.

Turns out, I was stronger than I gave myself credit for. My entire experience and results are below…

Three-Shakeology-FlavorsWhat in the world is Shakeology?

Shakeology is is an all natural, nutritional health shake mix that contains 70+ vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants per serving. It is made by Beachbody.

The cleanse:

My main reason for this experiment was to remove toxins. Over time, toxins from the food we consume builds up in our bodies creating an unhealthy interior that can surface as other ailments. (Feeling sluggish? Tired? Bloated?) This cleanse is meant to give the body the opportunity to rid these unhealthy elements from inside and replace them with the nutrients in Shakeology.

The plan allows between 800 and 1,100 calories per day, and includes vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and the Shakeology meal replacement shake.

The plan:

  • Breakfast: Green tea followed by Shakeology. Optional – a half piece of fruit.
  • Snack 1: fruit
  • Lunch: Green tea followed by Shakeology. Optional – a half piece of fruit.
  • Snack 2: Shakeology.
  • Dinner: A salad with greens, vegetables, 4 ounces of a lean protein (chicken, fish, or tofu), and a low fat dressing.
  • Details:
    • Lots and lots of water was encouraged throughout the challenge.
    • You can switch  your dinner and lunch, if it works better for your schedule

My Experience:

{Friday} Day 1 of the Shakeology Cleanse
Fitbit Steps: 10,925
Lost: 3 pounds

I immediately screwed up with Day 1 because I didn’t weigh myself and I consumed a cup of coffee with flavored creamer. This was mostly because I didn’t decide to do the cleanse until after my coffee and my workout, so it was unavoidable. I was impressed by the program because I didn’t feel hungry until dinner. In fact, I missed a shake this day because I screwed up my schedule. I started to feel a coffee headache coming on later in the day but ended up going to bed earlier than planned so it wasn’t an issue.

  • Snacks – orange
  • Dinner – salad with tuna and salsa for dressing
  • Water – one gallon

{Saturday} Day 2 of the Shakeology Cleanse
Fitbit Steps: 8,535
Lost:  1.3 pounds

Hardest day. I started adding 1/2 cup of strawberries and blueberries to my shakes to give them more flavor. I skipped intense exercise and instead opted to walk a bit. I also had to grocery shop which was not the easiest thing to do. Around 1pm I found myself incredibly tired and opted to take a nap. This seems to be fairly normal according to my research. That evening I had a dinner party to attend so I arranged with the hostess to bring my own food. (Hated doing that but the alternative was to stay home and miss out on good company.) Can I just pause here to pat myself on the back? Despite the phenomenal food and desserts, I ate the salad and my only cheat of the night was a cup of black coffee. Go me!

  • Snacks – strawberries/blueberries (combined with shake)
  • Dinner – salad with tuna and salsa for dressing
  • Water – one gallon
  • Cheat – cup of coffee

{Sunday} Day 3 of the Shakeology Cleanse
Fitbit Steps: 8,243
Lost:  1.3 pounds

Day 3 was both difficult and easy. I wanted to munch on food but I can’t really say that I craved anything specifically. I had a harder time getting my water in, but I managed to squeeze it in at the last minute. The biggest challenge through this whole exercise was the lack of energy. (Obviously that makes sense due to the lack of appropriate calorie consumption.) I also ended up taking a mid-afternoon siesta on this day as well.

  • Snacks – strawberries/blueberries (combined with shake)
  • Dinner – salad with tuna and salsa for dressing
  • Water – one gallon

Final Results

Weight lost: 5.6 pounds

Aside from the weight loss, the biggest result from my experience by far was DISCIPLINE. Participating in this cleanse gave me a greater sense of discipline. I wanted to succeed, so not even a dinner party could steer me from my goal of completing the cleanse. It definitely has given me a greater sense of empowerment to apply that discipline to other areas of my life as well as my fitness journey.
