My men have fled the house in pursuit of a testosterone-fueled sporting event leaving me all alone. At the moment I could be doing anything. Literally ANYTHING  at all. My options are wide open – dinner with a friend, manicure and pedicure or seeing a movie with my very own bag of popcorn. I have six hours of “me” time to play with. Six. Freaking. Hours. In mom time that translates into ETERNITY. I’m a planner by nature so when I found out about this impending opportunity I considered my options carefully.  (Decisions, decisions, decisions…) In the end I decided…

I hate horses. Okay, maybe HATE is too strong a word but DISLIKE isn’t. I strongly dislike horses. I’m sorry, but it is true. When I was 14 I was literally RUN OVER BY A HORSE. Yup. Hoof prints right up my back. Not my most awesome day. Since that fateful incident, I’ve kept my distance from horses and horse people. And you won’t catch me watching a  horse movie, either. Not gonna happen, man. So it was with much trepidation that I agreed to attend a charity function celebrating – wait for it – the Kentucky Derby. It all…

I’m a busy lady. With two teenagers, a fairly demanding job and (oh yeah!) a life to enjoy, I am always on the lookout for ways to hack the system. That being said, I believe that when you stop learning, you stop growing. Period. So how to continue learning without spending all of my free time in a classroom? PODCASTS. Now, I’ve written about this before and since that time, I’ve found a few new favorites so if you’re looking for some new ideas (or have never explored the world of podcasts) the following are a few to try: Stuff You…

A funny thing happened the other day. I got completely jazzed about writing again. Mojo? FOUND IT. It came in the form of a Babble Best Bloggers of 2014 nomination. I know, right?  Now, I’m not sure if I will make it on their radar screen or not for the final “Babble 100” but I certainly now have something to look forward to. (Not to mention, a goal to shoot for.) Want to help get Hip As I Wanna Be on their radar screens? VOTING AND COMMENTING HELPS! By using the share buttons or comments on my individual nomination page,…

Guilt. It is what I am all about. Since my oldest began school nine years ago, he has had challenges. We’ve always had an IEP. (I think he was born with it in his hand.) Some years have been effortless. And others, well, others have NOT. I ache for his struggles. I worry (oh how I worry) about his future. And I submerge myself in guilt. Because try as I may, I can’t conquer it all. I just can’t. I’VE TRIED. The more accomplished I am at work, the more guilt I feel about my lack of mothering skils. The…

No matter how hard I try, no matter how desperately I seek to avoid it, my circumstances often end up resembling that of a television sitcom. I may have mentioned before that I serve on the board of my local American Advertising Federation. (AAF-GF to be exact.) As part of my board duties, I recently stepped way outside of my comfort zone and into POLITICS. (Shudder) Normally, I don’t DO politics. It is not my thing. Also, I’m not a good debater so I shy away from outwardly discussing issues. That is, until the other day when I found myself…

After a longer-than-I-care-to-admit hiatus from the Working Mom Spotlight, we’re back on track with one of the most popular features on Hip As I Wanna Be – the WORKING MOM SPOTLIGHT!     We’re live, people! #ohyeah The newest issue of Frederick Gorilla Magazine is hitting the streets this week and is available via app, Kindle and Digital Edition. Yahoo! Putting together each magazine is a true labor of love. And while I usually tire quickly of edit after edit after edit, I must say that there is absolutely nothing like holding a copy in your hands when they are fresh off of the press. (Smells so good, too. WAIT. Is that weird?) Enjoy the new issue.
