Is there anything more therapeutic or satisfying as shopping? Of course not. We all know the answer to that, don’t we? As I shared with you a few days ago, I was given the opportunity to work withQueenstown Premium Outletsin Queenstown, Maryland to experience outlet shopping nearthe beautiful Eastern Shore. As a working mom, I am obsessed with trying to maximize my time. Rarely will you find me not multi-tasking or brainstorming or delegating. Shopping excursions aren’t the exeption to this norm so I worked out a plan of attack ahead of time in order to get everything accomplished that…

As a working mom, shopping is a luxury. I love shopping, don’t get me wrong, but window shopping and shopping for pleasure are not something I’ve had the luxury to enjoy for quite some time now. Because CHILDREN. And WORK. And NO KIND OF FREE TIME WHATSOEVER. But this weekend I’m breaking protocol (thanks, family!) and spending some quality time at Queenstown Premium Outlets in Queenstown, Maryland. I’ve spent the last year of my life using and reusing the same work wardrobe and frankly, it’s time I added some pop to my otherwise predictable ensemble. How this working mom gets herself ready for outlet shopping days……

Well, I did it. After taking a year off and running rarely casually I finally made my “big comeback.” It wasn’t what one would call effortless or graceful (by any stretch of the imagination) but I made it across the finish line. Let me start out by saying that I definitely wasn’t in training mode for this race. I wasn’t actually planning on anything official until the Frederick 1/2 on May 3rd. But a friend of a friend offered the bib to me and who am I to turn down something so karmic? The weekend of the Mission 10 Miler I was also scheduled to visit…

It’s Christmastime and those who celebrate are making their lists and checking them twice. For me, giving gifts is a favorite part of the holidays. In fact, I’d much rather give than receive. I love to see the faces on my family and friends when they open a gift they love! This year I wanted to give in a different way. I used my Facebook page (and this blog) as an outlet to encourage folks to buy from small businesses. The Unintended Recipient When small businesses are supported, everyone wins! The recipient gets a great gift and a local business…

I may have joined a cult. But it is a good cult, I promise. For the last 10 years Ive been told by various folks in my professional life that I needed to be a part of a program called Leadership Frederick County (LFC). This program, now in its 27th year, is run by the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce as an educational community leadership program. It sounds good, right? What was the hold up? Well, for me, the challenge with the program happened to be related to my work-life balance. Either it was too much of a commitment or…

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. Pumpkin spiced coffee, Halloween, beautiful running weather, piles of raked leaves… there is just nothing better. In the Gerlock household, fall also ushers in the Halloween season during which we go all out. A video of our house can be found here. (And that was years ago, the hubby has upped his game since then. But I digress.) Each year I make a bucket list of things we simply MUST DO in order to max out the season. The 2014 list: Mud Dog Zombie Run– Last year was the first year that…

I hate horses. Okay, maybe HATE is too strong a word but DISLIKE isn’t. I strongly dislike horses. I’m sorry, but it is true. When I was 14 I was literally RUN OVER BY A HORSE. Yup. Hoof prints right up my back. Not my most awesome day. Since that fateful incident, I’ve kept my distance from horses and horse people. And you won’t catch me watching a  horse movie, either. Not gonna happen, man. So it was with much trepidation that I agreed to attend a charity function celebrating – wait for it – the Kentucky Derby. It all…

In the past two years I’ve had quite a few opportunities to travel to places like Texas, D.C., New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Arizona. These destinations have been an equal mixture of business-family-running events. Because the purpose of each visit varies so much I find myself rating each experience according to a different set of expectations. (I’m nothing if not inconsistent.)  If I’m in town for a family getaway or sports tournament – the hotel needs to casual enough to please two teenage boys. If I am staying over for a running event – all I care about…

Obstacle course runs have always intimidated me. Despite the cajoling from past participants that “it’s a piece of cake” and “so much fun!” I never really imagined that I would take part in one. I think of the participants in these things as the CrossFit elite and the P90X folks. (Definitely not ME.) For the record, I have absolutely no upper body or core strength. Therefore, I never believed I could complete an obstacle course race without getting stuck or having to bypass the challenges. So I safely managed to avoid them when they came to town. Of course that…
