The Steamtown Marathon is tomorrow. We leave this morning at 11am. I’m suddenly not feeling ready. I’ve been so busy with work and kids, that I’ve not done a thing. Had a work function until late in the evening on Thursday. Spend an inordinate amount of time this week packing the kiddos for a soccer tournament that was (of course) cancelled at the last minute. Had a rare girls night out last night. Ate way too much and ended up crashing immediately after my return. It is 6:00am and the whole house is still asleep. It occurs to me that I’ve FORGOTTEN…

As a mom to the male species, I am frequently involved in a myriad of outdoor adventures. It simply can’t be avoided. In the Gerlock family, we’re very picky when it comes to the activities we chose to participate in during our spare time. (Hey, we are busy people!) When evaluating the possibility of a new experience, we ask five simple questions: Any dirt? Possibly mud? Rocks to throw? Wild animals about? Chance of death or dismemberment? If it meets all of the above criteria, WE’RE SO IN. The above criteria is why we spent our holiday hiking with two…

You know that whole marathon thing I’ve been talking about here and there? It is really creeping up on me. I’ve been running, of course, but never with an official plan. I  knew I needed to have one, but just never seemed to get around to mapping it. It is all about the art of denial, y’all. Of course, it is hard to deny the impending marathon when the organizers keep sending you race updates. So Katie and put together a plan for the next few weeks to get ourselves on target for the Steamtown Marathon on October 13th. (Which, in marathon…

They call it the “happiest 5K on the planet” where brightly colored cornstarch blasts turn participants into streaking rainbows. The Color Run hit Philadelphia on July 14th and our family was in attendance. For those who are unfamiliar, The Color Run is a 3.1 mile, un-timed race where thousands of participants are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. I’ve been wanting to do one since its inception. Everything about it appeals to me. Every time it came to Baltimore or DC, it was sold out before I could even register. But finally, we hit the jackpot. And it was worth…

Today the Runner’s World 2013 Summer Challenge (#RWRunStreak) begins. I’ve never done a running challenge before. And, quite frankly, I can think of a thousand reasons NOT to do it. (I’m a realist, Y’all. Inevitably I’m going to end up cursing myself at 11:00pm one evening after a particularly trying day. It is bound to happen.) And that is precisely why I want to participate. I want to see what I am made of. Especially considering my recent decent into the land of meh. There are 47 days until the Philadelphia Color Run and 138 days left until the Steamtown Marathon. I need…

Anyone else struggle with hydration while in training? It sometimes seems like a never ending concoction of sports drinks, water and chocolate milk. I tried something the other day that is making me rethink my hydration solutions, though. It is called ZICO (specifically, ZICO- Dark Chocolate) and it is a delicious combination of coconut water and dark-chocolate flavor. Mmm…. coconut water. Did I mention it was delicious? A study recently published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise showed that coconut water replenishes body fluids as well as a sports drink and better than water. ZICO is literally loaded with electrolytes:…

How happy are we that the weather is finally turning? I love this time of year. So full of promise! In the spirit of “promise,”I’ve begun setting some race goals for the year. I’m toying around with others but for now I’m only registered for two…   The Color Run – July 14th (Philadelphia) What started as a 5K being run with my niece Corrinne, quickly morphed into a full-on family affair with my sister and brother in-law, their three daughters, two boyfriends, and my own husband and children participating. I don’t know how it worked out but suddenly we…

I’m a happy, happy girl these days. My attitude is better. My smile is wider. My sense of humor returned. Heck, I even bought Chia seeds the other day. Why? It is running season again! Granted, it is still chilly out there but the birds are chirping and ice cycles are no longer forming in my hair. And THAT makes me happy. (Because who wants to run with an ice ponytail and hypothermic fingers?) And with the return of running season is a new resolve to incorporate the right nutrition and training into my daily life. (That and the threat of bathing…

I am beyond excited to share this initiative with you! As you may recall, I’m a huge supporter of the United Nations Foundation and participate in their initiatives whenever I can. Beginning February 11th, the UN Foundation is launching a new virtual event along with partner Charity Miles, that allows people across the country to walk, run, or bike to help raise $10k for charity, all without opening their wallets. If you are not yet familiar with the social good app Charity Miles, it’s a free iPhone/Android app that enables people to earn money for charity when they walk, run or…
