Ever discover something so wonderful you just want to share it with the world? Thanks to my dear pal Lori, I found the 21 Day Fix and it is quickly transforming the way I live out my life. I’ve spoken before about my need to take back my health. This plan has resonated with me like no other has. And after one week, I’ve lost seven (yes, OMG!) pounds, feel incredible and I am still totally committed. THE DEETS: 21 Day Fix focuses on workouts AND portion control. Portion control is my biggest area of weakness. Even when I eat well,…

This year I’m not running a marathon. You heard me. I’M NOT RUNNING A MARATHON. It will be my first time skipping in six years. (Technically, I did not run the year of Hurricane Sandy. That was the year I was scheduled to run my second New York Marathon but it was cancelled and I trained up through 20 miles so I TOTALLY COUNT IT.) I don’t really know why I am not tackling a marathon this year. It wasn’t a big decision or anything. I think Katie and I just needed a mental break from training and simply couldn’t bring…

I need a challenge and I need it now. My health is suffering and I’m not motivated in the least to do anything about it. (Except sleep.) I’m not ready to do anything ridiculous at this point, but I am looking to embark on some sort of program to kick start myself. So, after analyzing my work and family commitments I’ve come up with a pretty solid (and definitely easy) plan. I’m calling it my ’30 for 30.’ There are no major rules. No insurmountable obstacles. Basically, all I have to do is get up off my ass and do…

Dammit New York, why are you so expensive?! Got a reminder email from the New York Marathon that I was guaranteed entry into this year’s marathon. Squee, right? Not really. I honestly was over-the-moon excited about it UNTIL I went to complete my registration. Ouch! $266 for registration alone. Mentally I started adding up the costs for the trip – parking, train, hotel, food, cab fare, etc. That is when I realized that I’m looking at spending the equivalent of a Caribbean vacation to go to a crowded city and exhaust myself from hours of pounding the pavement. For that…

In a previous post I shared with you some of my goals for 2014. My friend Lori and I have pledged to challenge each other through the year to keep each other accountable and also, admittedly, in the spirit of competition. For my birthday Lori gifted me with Shakeology 3 Day Cleanse. I’ve seen her do this before with much success so I really wanted to give it a go. Frankly, I wasn’t sure this experiment would work. I’d never done a fast/cleanse before and it was pretty intimidating. Plus I would have to give up coffee and that in…

Obstacle course runs have always intimidated me. Despite the cajoling from past participants that “it’s a piece of cake” and “so much fun!” I never really imagined that I would take part in one. I think of the participants in these things as the CrossFit elite and the P90X folks. (Definitely not ME.) For the record, I have absolutely no upper body or core strength. Therefore, I never believed I could complete an obstacle course race without getting stuck or having to bypass the challenges. So I safely managed to avoid them when they came to town. Of course that…

It’s done. I FINISHED. I CONQUERED. I AM VICTORIOUS. Obnoxious, much? Clearly the fact that you are reading this blog means that Katie and I made it across the finish line of the 2013 Steamtown Marathon. Which is a fantastic feeling. (Even if the feeling only lasted a few hours before being completely re-submerged into real life. Which totally sucks, BTW. Not my own real life, just the fact that one can get up at a ridiculously early hour in the morning, accomplish a tremendous feat of endurance and then return home a few hours later only to be faced with laundry…

The Steamtown Marathon is tomorrow. We leave this morning at 11am. I’m suddenly not feeling ready. I’ve been so busy with work and kids, that I’ve not done a thing. Had a work function until late in the evening on Thursday. Spend an inordinate amount of time this week packing the kiddos for a soccer tournament that was (of course) cancelled at the last minute. Had a rare girls night out last night. Ate way too much and ended up crashing immediately after my return. It is 6:00am and the whole house is still asleep. It occurs to me that I’ve FORGOTTEN…

I am so unbelievably behind with this blog. And there has been a ton going on lately in my world. Honestly, I don’t even know where to start. This post will probably end up a mish mosh of information so fair warning. Where to start? How about … Buffalo? Yeah, I know what you are thinking. I’d never pondered a business trip to Buffalo, either. Nonetheless, I hopped a flight to NY a week ago to attend the District 2 American Advertising Federation’s Fall Leadership Conference. The conference is a fairly intimate gathering of industry executives from across the region who…

As a mom to the male species, I am frequently involved in a myriad of outdoor adventures. It simply can’t be avoided. In the Gerlock family, we’re very picky when it comes to the activities we chose to participate in during our spare time. (Hey, we are busy people!) When evaluating the possibility of a new experience, we ask five simple questions: Any dirt? Possibly mud? Rocks to throw? Wild animals about? Chance of death or dismemberment? If it meets all of the above criteria, WE’RE SO IN. The above criteria is why we spent our holiday hiking with two…
